Individuals caught up in trauma recovery, life's struggles or the “World of Addictions”, often perceive themselves to be “Helpless”.
They struggle with lack of motivation, often fueled by a lack of belief in their ability to change. They may also be caught up in a cycle of ambivalence – "I'm all right. - I'm not all right." or “I want to change! – I don’t want to change!”
The impact of trauma, or the stress of marriage or family difficulties, often involve issues of guilt and shame, which have a confusing and isolating effect. Procrastination on seeking help is often about avoiding the anxiety of talking about these feelings.
If the struggle is with an addiction they may be fearful of the pain of withdrawal. They may also be fearful of facing the truth about their harmful involvement or dependency. They may be aware of underlying emotional pain they have never been able to address.
Ultimately though individuals are faced with the fact that change will only begin to happen as they initiate it – take the first step.
If this is your personal struggle hopefully you will find resources here to help take “the first step.”
Raising your awareness about Trauma Recovery, the Addictive Process, the Withdrawal Process, understanding the Spiritual Dimension, and trusting the Four “R” Pledge from Recovery Centre for Addictions, Trauma and Families may help you take that “First Step.”
"Total Life Approach"
At Recovery Centre for Addictions, Trauma & Families we do not just treat the addiction or trauma. We examine the context of life and address the needs of the whole person. Only then can true and lasting change occur. This may also include a spiritual process if you so chose.
