Four "R's" of Change & Recovery PDF Print E-mail

The experience of a personal or family crisis, or a traumatic event, feels isolating and is filled with great personal pain and confusion. Facing the pain and gathering courage to move forward are necessary first steps.

Also, the harmfull effects of an addiction are clearly seen by others, but often not clearly seen by those struggling with the process. But when honestly acknowledged and felt and owned by the person struggling with the addiction, what emerges is a desire to stop the harm. To 'stop the harm', the first steps of change are to reach out for help and focus on harm reduction, abstinence and a time of "detoxification".

But change and recovery is not just about insight, acknowledgement, abstinence, detoxification or making amends, ultimately it is about:

  • Safety Needs
  • Identity Needs
  • Intimacy Needs

Our counselling practice and teaching reflect this reality.

The Recovery Centre Pledge is that you be helped to discover and apply the four "R's" of Change & Recovery:

 •Resources •Resiliency •Resolve •Renewal

Resources

Individuals and Families will receive the counselling resources necessary to begin a personalized Action Plan of change and recovery. This applies to individual, family, or marriage resoration as well as addiction and trauma recovery. If needed individuals and families will be directed to other community resources available.

Resiliency

The counselling process is designed to overcome resistance to change and increase the motivation of each individual toward change. Personal strengths will be discovered or re-discovered that will help develop a resilient character that responds well to solving life's challenges. People of faith will experience the power of God in their recovery process.

Resolve

One of the key processes of change is "Commitment". Commitment can begin with a shared decision as "small as a mustard seed", but can grow into a huge tree seen by all. The counselling process will be one that helps build resolve. Individuals will also quickly realize the rewards of perseverance as they experience health physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

Renewal

The change and recovery process is not just about abstinence, forgetting painful events, or making amends - it is ultimately about healing and Lifestyle Change. While neutralizing pain and achieving abstinence (saying "No") pain are important initial goals, full recovery is about processing life, embracing change, and discovering what you really want to say "Yes" to!

Personal healing, the resoration of relationships and overcoming addiction and trauma is also about the miracle of new beginnings. It is about becoming "unstuck" and experiencing the hope and renewal of "here and now living."

A comprehensive Action Plan has as it's final stage a launching into a new way of life that does not include the debilitating anxiety of a traumatic event, the confusion of relationship discord, or addiction. Since underlying psychological and spiritual issues have been addressed the "Renewed" person will experience the freedom to make healthy choices and will acquire the personal skills and qualities necessary to adapt well to whatever life brings.
