Are you at a Crossroads...? If you are seeking help through the counselling process you have begun a very helpful and courageous journey. But we know individuals stuck in trauma confusion, life's struggles, or the “World of Addictions”, often perceive themselves to be “Helpless”.Being motivated is a struggle, often fueled by a lack of belief in the ability to change. You may also be caught up in a cycle of ambivalence – "I'm all right. - I'm not all right." or “I want to change! – I don’t want to change!” The impact of trauma, the presence of an addiction, or the stress of marriage or family difficulties, often involve issues of guilt and shame, which have a confusing and isolating effect. Procrastination on seeking help is often about avoiding the anxiety of talking about these feelings. If the struggle is with an addiction there may also be anxiety about the pain of withdrawal. You may also be fearful of facing the truth about your harmful involvement or dependency. Ultimately though individuals like yourself are faced with the fact that help is only available, and change will only happen, as you initiate it – take the first step. If this is your personal struggle hopefully you will find resources here to help take “the first step.” You are not Alone! It is also good to know that you need not be alone in your change process, and change does not need to have a spectacular beginning. Change happens for us like the planting of a small seed in soil. If the soil is receptive, and the seed nurtured and taken care of, it will sprout and put down roots. The next stage of growth is the visible stalk above the ground, which if nurtured and taken care of, will become a strong stalk of wheat or corn, or even a tree. This plant then becomes resilient and strong as it experiences the elements of its environment and survives. The end result is a plant that is productive for nurture or for shelter for others. Change must have a beginning, and usually it is hidden, humble, and largely unnoticed. But it can, and will, have a spectacular ending if nurtured and allowed to take root. Our hope is that your choice to seek help through Recovery Centre for Addictions, Trauma and Families will be a helpful, hopeful and fruitful journey of recovery and restoration.
